Good day class! I am your ‘Soul School Sunday’ Professor Shawn Knight and today we are going to talk about memorable moments in history that took place this week.
Where were YOU when these events happened?
November 3rd, in 1992, Whitney Houston released her cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.”
Originally written by Dolly Parton, in 1974, Whitney Houston put her own twist on this record, and she didn’t disappoint. According to People, the single from ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack turned out to be a smash hit going #1 and earning Houston a Grammy Award in 1994 and earning a certified diamond by the RIAA for having more than ten million units sold.
November 3rd, in 1978, ‘Different Strokes’ premiered on NBC.
This sitcom started on NBC in 1978 to 1985, and on ABC from 1985 to 1986 starring Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, brothers who was adopted by Philip Drummond (Conrad Bain) and his daughter Kimberly (Dana Plato).
A fun fact about the show is that the popular catch phrase “Whatchu talkin’ ‘bout Willis?” was a typo as it was originally scripted “What are you talking about Willis?” and by the late 1990’s Coleman was tired of the line and refused to say it.
November 5th, in 1935, Parker Brothers launched the now-iconic board game, Monopoly.
This game causes family arguments in my household around the holidays! This game consists of buying property and try to wheel and deal your way to the top with your riches!
However, did you know this little fun fact that the police officer in the game has a name? Officer Edgar Mallory is making sure you do right by the game or you will end up in jail with Jake “The Jailbird.”
November 9th, in 1984, ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ premiered in the US.
One, Two, Freddy’s coming for you….
That song today STILL gives me chills as in the fall of 1984, people in America were afraid to fall asleep after being introduced to horror movie icon Freddy Kruger as the film ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ premiered in theaters.
Did you know that the name ‘Freddy Kruger’ was an actual person? He was named after a bully at Wes Craven’s school and the boiler room in the move was shot in the basement of the Lincoln Heights Jail in Los Angeles. The movie grossed $1,271,000 in its opening weekend and considered a commercial success.
A total of 8 ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies were made including a face off with Jason Vorhees and television series.
Recently, actor Robert England who portrayed Freddy Kruger was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Thank you for your attention class...You’re dismissed!
