Girlfriends is getting a resurgence after landing on Netflix. The show debuted on the streaming giant earlier this month. Events like this make you wonder, ‘Where are they now?'.
We’ve seen where the major characters from Girlfriends have landed over the years. Tracee Ellis Ross (Joan Clayton) is an award winner and has another hit series, Black-ish. Jill Marie Jones (Toni Childs) has appeared on shows like American Horror Story and Sleepy Hollow. Golden Brooks (Mya Wilkes) has appeared in various movies and TV shows including I Am the Night where her performance received critical acclaim. Persia White (Lynn Searcy) is a musician. To top it off, they all reunited recently for an episode of Black-ish.
But what about the 5th girlfriend? Reggie Hayes (William Dent) says he’s now battling congestive heart failure and was recently hospitalized.
In an interview with Chicago Tribune Hayes says he struggled following the cancellation of Girlfriends. “I had starred on this long running show but I wasn’t Matt LeBlanc or one of the other kids from ‘Friends’ who had doors opening for them after their show ended. Pretty much, I was just another guy.”
Hayes, 51, went from his own home to his sister’s garage. The Chicago native appeared in a few TV shows following the success of Girlfriends but it wasn’t consistent enough to pay the bills. He says he tried various jobs to support himself from a bouncer to a mover. “My back never would have survived it.” Even though he’s out of the garage he’s living with roommates.
Now that the show is on Netflix and he says, “it feels like a second birthday”.
